Spotify is asking some Premium Family members to prove they live with the plan manager through an in-person QR scan. The process is described on a support page, with no separate public announcement cited by the source.
The manager opens a QR code in the Spotify app and the member scans it with their phone camera. According to the support page, both must be in the same place, the code changes every few seconds, and the check can only be completed in the mobile app.
Members who do not complete the verification within seven days, or fail it, cannot join another Family or Duo plan for 12 months. The QR check sits alongside existing address verification for multi-user plans.
Goldman Sachs, in its Music in the Air report published on October 15, wrote that music streaming services could capture more value from multi-user plans by tightening eligibility, also citing Netflix’s password-sharing crackdown.
