UMG and Sony cleared to accuse Suno of YouTube stream ripping in copyright case

Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment have added a claim to their copyright lawsuit against Suno over the alleged circumvention of YouTube’s anti-downloading technology.

Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV allowed the labels to bring the claim under Section 1201(a) of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The amended complaint alleges that Suno obtained recordings through stream ripping and tools including YT-DL and YT-DLP.

The same judge rejected the labels’ separate request to add 61,026 recordings to the 560 already in the case. Fact discovery closes on September 30, with both sides expected to seek summary judgment on the fair use issue.
